Baserment with natural light and maximum space

Small basement of 45 m2 in a semi-detached house in Madrid that stands out for its luminosity and space optimization. A discreet design and a mix of natural materials make way for light, where before there was only darkness, generating a space full of life where you can breathe serenity and elegance.

Designed for a young couple, animal lovers, who like to spend time at home with their two cats. The apartment is projected in the basement of the family home that for many years served as a storage room and pantry.

The fundamental premises of the project were to make the most of the space and to maximize the entry of natural light. The latter was achieved by modifying the height of the window sills of each of the windows that were flush with them and hindered the smooth passage of sunlight.

Thanks to this small modification the light passes through the windows into the interior of the apartment sliding down the walls and floor generating a space full of light and life. The access to the apartment is on the first floor. Through a glass door we access a small hallway where white predominates in all its walls, this contributes to provide clarity and continuity of the rest of the house.

This small hallway leads to a solid natural oak staircase, which was in the house and only had to be restored. A white painted MDF wainscot with integrated wall washers was designed to illuminate the steps and serves as a handrail.

Open space

The first floor is resolved with a practically diaphanous space, with oak wood flooring and white walls. The privacy between bedroom, work area and living room is solved thanks to two iron and glass enclosures. This symmetrical composition visually arranges the space and allows light to flow through the entire floor.

To perceive the maximum space it was decided to locate the kitchen, taking advantage of the free space, under the staircase where storage cabinets are also integrated.

The kitchen is open to the living room, thus creating a fluid circulation.

At the ends of the floor are located the private areas, on one side the bedroom with bathroom and on the other side a multipurpose space that serves as a dining room or work area and in the future could serve as a small bedroom as it has storage area and bathroom.

The reduced dimensions of the apartment are solved with a careful study of the space for its better use and maximizing the entry of natural light, making the apartment look bigger than it is
